Networking

iStock_000006680981MediumFirst, you probably won’t think of it this way, but you are better at networking than you think. Let’s face it, you network in the grocery store, in church, in an elevator, at your children’s school. Networking is having a conversation. Let’s take the stress out of feeling like you have to have a sales pitch.

Networking, at least, good networking is a skill. I don’t think it comes naturally. The art of networking and at the core is, don’t expect anything in return. When you genuinely want to help a colleague succeed, you will succeed. Networking is planting a seed. You never know where that conversation will go or lead. Many times, it will surprise you that it does come back to you. What you give out, comes back.

In my travels, I have heard over and over, people do business with people they know. Networking is another way of saying you are building on your relationships. With that, you build trust and trust leads to referrals.

Networking isn’t easy. As it does have the word, “work” in it. Network! It’s hard work and you have to keep doing it to get better at your skills. Networking isn’t a sales pitch. You are a farmer planting a seed, and with your hard work, you can watch that seed grow.

What can you walk away with from this article? If you are passionate about your career choice, like what you do, then simply be yourself. Keep in mind when introducing yourself, How can I help you gain more business? Plant the seed, water it and help it grow. Helping others builds your confidence and and in return, you gain trust with others.

Just be yourself and enjoy what you do, the talking comes easy!

WordPress Template Sites

2012While my firm specializes in custom, high-end WordPress designs, we also occasionally recommend the use of pre-designed themes for WordPress.  For those with budget constraints, this may be a perfect alternative.

WordPress, of course, delivers the best platform for small business websites, allowing you, the site owner, to edit and change your website through an easy-to-use web control panel. Add your own pages, add your own images, play with the menus – it’s all in your control!

Lower-cost websites with pre-designed themes that you essentially pick from an online “catalog” make WordPress accessible to businesses with tighter budgets. And, although you may not be able to brand the site exactly as you imagine, there are many, many quite good site designs to choose from.  Best of all, once you have a fully-functional WordPress website, you can upgrade to a custom design when budget allows.

We’d be glad to discuss this option with you, and help you weigh the pros and cons of both types of design.  In the end, you want a site that looks great, represents your business (and you!) well, and helps drive more visitors into your world.

Write an Article!

post_gadget_igoogleHmm…  So I’m writing an article called “Write an Article.”  I’m already confused – are you?

At a recent networking meeting, our group was discussing ways to get a message across to our clients that (a) shows what we as professionals can do, and (b) doesn’t sound “showy” or arrogant. It’s not always easy to do! Personally, I have a lot of trouble getting up in a group setting and talking about my business, because it often feels like I am coming across as self-centered, though I’m pretty sure that’s not me.

One of the ways we can share our knowledge and gain traction with people as an expert in our chosen field is to write articles. Articles should sound comfortable and conversational, and be brief.  We all know that the human attention span for this type of thing is not what it used to be!

But, most importantly, it should offer something that people can use, on their own, to help with their business, life, etc.  In other words, something relevant.

After writing your article, you can post it on your blog, as I’m doing here.  After you’re done, post a link to your blog post on your LinkedIn, Facebook, and Twitter account.  Then, repeat. Do an article weekly, post it in your social media, and watch the “likes” and responses come in!  You can also promote your business a bit by leaving the article a bit open ended.  For instance: “Want to know more about writing and posting articles online?  Contact us today to learn more.”

Finally, have fun with it. You have your own unique voice, your own unique take on your industry, your own amazing personality.  Let it shine!

Using the WordPress Mobile App

If you have an Android phone, iPhone or iPad did you know there is a version of WordPress for your device? If you have a WordPress site, this means you can log in to your site on your mobile device and make changes and updates. Having mobile access to your blog is really handy, and having a slick mobile app that takes full advantage of your mobile’s interface makes it easy.

To use this tool, download the appropriate version to your handheld:

WordPress for iOS

WordPress for Android

Both apps allow you to edit your blog and update your content. You simply enter your site’s URL (web address) and your username and password, and the app connects to your site and downloads your recent content. From there, you can add new content and edit old content.

WordPress remains a great tool for your business, and with these mobile apps, WordPress is even easier to use. Contact us if you have any questions or would like more ideas on how to get the most out of WordPress.

New Site Release: Toppy America

toppy-blogThis week, we were able to launch another unique new website design, this time for Toppy America, based in Canton, CT.  Toppy supplies Italian-built large-scale machinery for the printing, pharmaceutical, and food industries, increasing these companies efficiency and profitability with automation.  Their machines are very cool!  Be sure to check out the video page to see them in action.

Toppy already had an older WordPress site, so we were able to create a new theme (or “skin”) for their old site, and keep all of their content and photos intact.  It was a new challenge for us, working with code originally written by others, but the result is, as you can see, a very attractive new site.  Check them out at www.toppyamerica.com!

New Site Release: Brain, Child Magazine

bc-portThis week we had the privilege of releasing a new site for Brain, Child: The Magazine for Thinking Mothers. In addition to having a unique, custom design, this site utilizes the WordPress blog functionality in an unusual and effective way to display web-only content from this excellent magazine. Other features include a fully-functional product store and online subscription purchase and management.  The owners of the magazine are able to click a button in our interface to generate an accurate mailing list when it comes time to send out the next issue.

From the Editor, Marcelle Soviero: “At Brain, Child we strive to bring the voices of women of different backgrounds and circumstances together on the page and on our website. Through essays, fiction and feature stories our writers provide their unique perspectives on being mothers and women while addressing readers as thinking individuals, not just medicine-dispensing, food-fixing, boo-boo-kissing mommies.”

The website for Brain, Child presented new and different challenges for us, and we’re excited to help the magazine reach more and more people online.

What Are “retina”-quality Graphics?

Recently, Apple computer released the new MacBook Pro with a “retina” quality display. A “retina” display is a buzzword created by Apple to describe the high-resolution screens found on the iPhone, iPad and now the MacBook Pro with Retina Display.

The “retina” display works by concentrating a high number of pixels into a small space, making for extra sharp images. The pixels are packed together to provide 4 to 5 times higher pixel-density than a traditional screen. Though Apple is leading the pack on this one, you can be sure that high-resolution screens are soon to become the standard on new models. Why? Because they look great!

What does this mean for your website? Well, as more people adopt a “retina” screen, website graphics will need to be updated to correspond to the new high resolution standards. We have competing interests here! On the one hand, we want to keep graphic files small so that they load faster over the internet. On the other hand, we always want to take advantage of new technologies so your website looks great!

Over the next year, we suspect “retina”-like displays will become more common, and the need to upgrade the resolution of images on your website more apparent. For now though, these displays are the exception, not the rule. As adoption of new display technology changes the landscape of what people expect on their screens, we will be ready to change your website accordingly.

WordPress 3.5 Released

Recently, the gurus at WordPress released a new version of WordPress, version 3.5. This is a significant update. If we host your site, we will be rolling this update out wordpress-logo-stacked-rgbto you soon. Many of you have already been updated.

What’s new in this version? Well, this is a significant upgrade, and you may notice some changes when you log in next time. The biggest change is in how WordPress handles your media, images and videos. The new media manager is designed to be easier to use and offers a few handy features drag-and-drop configuring of galleries and the ability to insert multiple images into a post at one time. If you use images in your blog post, these changes should be helpful.

Of course, there are also a host of security and bug fixes. The administration area has been upgraded for “retina” displays, if you happen to be lucky enough to have such a display. And many of the software libraries that WordPress uses have been updated to the latest versions.

All in all, with version 3.5, you should have a smoother experience with images and other media files and a sharper looking administration area. You can read more about the release here and you can always contact us if you have any questions.

A New Year Approaches

We might be inclined to take a moment and look back on 2012 and remember all that was accomplished. At NFR, that would be quite a list as many things have changed in our business over the past 12 months.

Ppbc_icon_checklistBut looking back isn’t really our style. Instead, we are looking at 2013 and planning the new year.  I hope you are thinking about the opportunities for your business in 2013, and ways you can position your business for success.

Of course, we stand ready to help with your website. As you think about your online presence for 2013, ask yourself:

  • Are your images current? (Still using that headshot from 2003?)
  • Does the design of your site reflect the quality of your business?
  • How current is your site text? (Still advertising a sale from last Spring?)
  • Does your site look good on modern computers and mobile devices/phones?
  • Does your website and print material match so that you are easily identified? (business cards, letterhead, mailings, etc.)
  • Are there website features you’ve always wanted? (e-store, video, forms, photo gallery, events calendar etc.)
  • How does your site do in a Google search?
  • Is your website connected with your LinkedIn, Twitter, and Facebook accounts?

It may be time to consider a new site design or a refresh. Need help? I invite you to be in touch for advice on how to make your site come alive, so that you can start 2013 with your best foot forward!

Changes at Google (and North Forty Road)

For years we have recommended Google Apps for Business as a great way for small businesses to get high-quality email services with enterprise features. Google Apps allows you to use your own domain name for email, yet also take advantage of all the great online services Google offers, such as Google Drive and Google Calendar. Until recently, Google offered these services for free to organizations that used fewer than 10 accounts.

Now, however, Google has changed their policy. If you already are a Google Apps for Business user, your free account will continue to be honored. However, new users will have to pay $5/per user/per month or $50/per user/per year. That’s still a great value for any business, considering the services Google bundles together, but it is most definitely not free! To learn more about these changes, visit Google’s Enterprise Blog.

It is fair to say that we would still recommend Google Apps for Business. Think about it: there is no software for you to install, upgrade or maintain. There are no mail servers to worry about. There is not a calendar server or a file server that needs to be maintained. You get a virtual office with file storage, best-in-class email services, and innovative collaborative tools all with 24 hour support. That’s worth the money in our book.

Our business is changing too. We are focusing more and more on making great websites for innovative and expanding businesses. We remain focused on great value, but we are also doing more with websites than in the past. The websites we are now building leverage the latest technologies on the web. We are investing our time and energy in bringing very capable websites to our clients. This means we are not as focused as we have been on other aspects of our business, such as hosting and tech support.

Consequently, we plan in the next year to partner with great service providers who can meet the support and server needs of our clients. We anticipate migrating many of our hosting clients to new hosting providers who will also provide tech support. For our customers, this should be a seamless process. The only thing you’ll probably notice is a new name and address on the billing invoice for your hosting. Rest assured that we will inform you of any changes to your account before it happens.

Also rest assured that we will continue to work to create great websites for our clients. The web continues to provide a fertile foundation for innovation and expansion and we intend to help you utilize the web for your business to the fullest extent possible.
