Social Media Tools for WordPress

ID-10078955We have learned that social media is the new king of marketing… but make no mistake, your website is still critical, and should serve as the central hub for all of your online marketing. It’s home!

WordPress developers have created numerous tools that can help pull together all of your online real estate.  Check out these great plugins:

Social Media Widget: So simple, and the clearest way to direct people from your website to your social media. As the name implies, Social Media Widget adds a widget to your sidebar with icon links to each of your social media outlets. Install the plugin, add the widget to your sidebar, add the URL of each of your social media pages, and you’re off and running! Tip: Set each icon to open a new page/tab so that your website remains open. You can see this plugin in action on our homepage.

Sociable: Take your Social Media integration to the next level by adding “share” buttons at the end of each page or article. You can easily configure which media you wish to use, and the connection to each happens in the background automatically. Sociable also includes “print” and “email”, allowing full control of your viewers’ sharing experience.

Pinterest “Pin It” Button: Make it easy for your site visitors to Pin your images to their Pinterest board, sharing the wealth of great content you are posting! Install it, set it, and forget it… This plugin adds a “Pin It” button to your pages, and defaults to pinning the first image on each page.

How do you wake up?

iStock_000004140736LargeMaybe I overthink things, but I have found that how I spend the first couple of hours of the day is critical to the success of the day ahead.

How do you do start out?

When I first opened this business in 2006, I woke up so excited and frightened that it was “right to the email!”… Later on, as this business grew, I discovered that it was more important to get my head in the game first, so that I could approach the many requests from my clients happily, and with genuine enthusiasm to be helpful (which is what I actually love most about this job!).

So, for those of you in a similar pattern, I suggest making a plan.

Here’s what works for me:

  1. Awake with gratitude. First thing when my feet hit the floor, I say a quiet “thank you” for my family, my business, all of the many good things that life has brought to me. Gratitude is a powerful way to keep your mind on what’s important, so that all of the little things of the day feed your inner self.
  2. Read something good for your soul. After I get into that cup of coffee, I spend some time reading something spiritual or uplifting. Sometimes it is just a few pages or a chapter, but soul-feeding words bring a smile to my face and the right attitude for the day ahead. I’m a person of faith, so many of the books I find inspiration are of that ilk, but there are many others.  A few examples: The Bible, The Power of Now (Tolle), The Secret (Byrne), Pray and Grow Rich (Ponder), The Four Agreements (Ruiz), With Open Hands (Nouwen). Follow the reading with a 5-minute quiet meditation, and you’ll feel very relaxed and ready to take on just about anything.
  3. Exercise. This is a tough one for many of us, because it involves habit change. If you can stick to some kind of regimen daily, though, after a month or so you’ll really miss it if you don’t do it! I run between 1 and 3 miles almost daily now, but that started with walking twice a week, walking daily, running that first mile (huffing and puffing!), and eventually working my way to a new routine. Listening to podcasts while I run inspires the day ahead.  Here are a couple of great business podcasts that I have at the ready: This Is Your Life (Hyatt), Morning Coach (Glossinger), Entrepreneur on Fire (Godin).

Now, you’re ready! Go into the day feeling good about yourself, grateful about your life, and ready to be high-minded and open-minded… the makings of an awesome business person. Please take a moment to share how you start your day.

Five Steps to Happiness

ID-10057676I’ve just been reading about this guy by the name of Ray Chambers, who has gone from a hugely successful entrepreneur/Wall Street mogul to a life of philanthropy, including his new role as the UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for Malaria. His five steps to happiness are startlingly simple and powerful:

Live in the moment

It’s better to be loving than to be right

Be a spectator to your own thoughts, especially when you become emotional

Be grateful for at least one thing every day

Help others every chance you get

If you are like me, you struggle with balancing these… with devoting time to both moving forward with your business and doing good for others.  I believe it is possible, with just 1% improvement daily, to make that all happen at once. Does your business help people?  Does your work as a volunteer help to feed your business? Does it all feed your soul? I, for one, am getting closer to that every day. You can, too!

Fall Checklist – Are you ready?

Summer gives way to Fall so quickly that it is easy to be surprised and overwhelmed at this time of year. My purpose today is to remind you that your online presence can help get things in motion for a very productive and prosperous fall.

checkmarkHere are some ways you can use your website to generate some fall enthusiasm:

  • Start that Blog…  Remember that Google loves new and fresh content more than anything else.  A simple article once a week (like this one) can help your site rank better, and show your fans that you are not only still “there”, but are up-to-date and always learning.
  • Hook that Blog up to your Social Media… There are great WordPress plugins that auto-post your new blog articles on your LinkedIn, Facebook, and Twitter accounts. In one click, you’re everywhere!
  • Run a Contest… Have something free you can offer in a drawing? Send an email blast out with a survey that asks for valuable marketing info and offer something valuable.
  • Update your Content… Everything on your website up-to-date? Be sure you don’t have any mentions of things you don’t do anymore, people who don’t work with you anymore, and most importantly, look out for “coming events” that are long past.
  • Add Pictures and Video… People respond to visuals far more than text. Been thinking about making a little YouTube commercial?  Now’s the time!
  • Get It Out There… Maybe now is the time to consider some online advertising, especially if your Yellow Pages ad is really not getting you anywhere.

We’re glad to help!  Contact your Trusted Web Advisor today to discuss any of these directions.

Don’t take yourself (our anyone) too seriously…

ID-10063202In a world where such huge emphasis is placed upon “getting it done” and “getting it now” and “getting it cheap”, it’s so easy to lose our sense of humor, or even our sense of people.

Technology (our bread and butter, being an internet-based company) doesn’t help matters, making things more and more instantaneous. Letter writing has given way to short, impersonal email, which has degraded even further to almost-nonsensical I.M. and text messaging. There are great benefits, to be sure, but aren’t we missing something?

So, one antidote to the quick + now nature of business is to simply have more fun. Take some time to laugh with your colleagues, and more importantly, your clients! This requires something that we are often afraid of doing: pick up the phone.

One of my favorite things in our business is the online help we provide our clients when they are learning how to use WordPress for editing their new website. More times than not, it is a pretty vulnerable time for the client, because it brings to light where they lack some higher-level computer skills. It’s also vulnerable for us, because this is when our own inevitable mistakes come to light. It’s not a big deal though, because all of a sudden we are all on the same page, we’re all human, and we’re all poking fun at ourselves. It brings us closer as people, and it’s fun!

Take time to get to know your clients, and allow them to get to know you. It will pay off great dividends for both your business and your soul!

ccpierceWe’re excited to announce another new North Forty website release this week!

What does good web design look like?

Good design is one of the most critical pieces of any new website. As tastes and trends change over time, there are some hallmarks that professionals look for.  And, for site visitors, even without a design background or “eye,” they respond on a subconscious level to good design, and actually reject poorly designed websites without knowing why.

We at North Forty believe that great design is found in simplicity and relevance. Can the focus of your business be found immediately?  Does the imagery of the site draw visitors in? Are visitors able to quickly and easily find what they are looking for? WordPress has provided many possible layouts, and through market research and success stories, we have found the following layout details to be very effective:

Bristol Hearing Aids

1. Logo and NavigationKnowing exactly where you are makes you feel comfortable, right?  Navigation should be front and center, and should include all pages in a logical fashion so your site visitors can get to what they need, immediately. How’s your logo? Does it truly represent the mood, professionalism and quality of your work?

2. Focus Slideshow: People respond to good images, so don’t skimp here! Have a pro take some photos of your work, and especially include images of people. Your site visitors care less about what you do, and more about how you make people feel. Show that with pictures.

3. Content and Sidebar: Each page has text and images related to your business, kept brief and informative. As site visitors become more curious and delve deeper into the site, the info you provide can become more detailed. The sidebar holds all of the info that you want to remind your public about on every page, including contact methods and a call to action.

At North Forty Road, we stand ready to help you develop an effective web presence, while helping you explore your brand and make it more compelling. Contact us today for a free consultation!

Music for Mission

peaceI’m taking a moment today to talk about music and charity; please take a moment to read and make a purchase or donation if you feel so moved.

Many of you know that my “other life” is as a church musician – organist, pianist, choral director. Over the years, I have done some recording, and have self-produced three albums of music for pipe organ and piano. The most recent CD, “Peace“, is a recording of my own piano compositions, music perfect for relaxation and meditation.

Half of the proceeds of my music sales support the Homeless Outreach Network in Waterbury, an organization that helps the large number of folks who are on the margin of society, living in the woods or in abandoned buildings. Your purchase or donation will go directly toward food, water, clothing and shoes for these individuals.

Everything you need to know is at this website: www.musicformission.org, including an opportunity to buy CDs, buy music from iTunes or Amazon, or donate directly.

(The remaining half of the proceeds supports the expenses of making future CDs to keep this venture in motion. 100% of donations go directly to the cause.)

Thanks for your support!
